Mercy will you look at this island. I have seen a few but rarely anything that seems to have such a sense of prospect from the air, such a sense geological jewellery as this. Those cliffs, that little collection of mans work with walls like lain silver thread and such a even plain of grass. Islands are places rich with yearning… either to be upon or I suppose equally to be off. Somewhere else. Just have a look on google maps and you have another view of it.. its just a few hundred yards west of the village of Birsay on mainland Orkney. Its pin sharp as a place, acute and clear with all the physicality a place could muster. What’s more, its a tidal island that makes it not an island. How perfect. I will go there.
